Nvidia’s best new graphics card, the GeForce RTX 50 series, costs $2,000 and is an absolute power hog

Nvidia’s new GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards have been officially revealed and they are hideous. The RTX 5090 costs $2,000 and requires a recommended power supply of 1 kW, which is about the same as the continuous operation of a belt sander. The latest GPU lineup comes as Nvidia rushes to meet demand in the current AI rat race.

The new GPUs, which promise to take PC gaming systems to the next level, were unveiled on the CES 2025 stage by CEO Jensen Huang on Monday evening. You’re probably familiar with DLSS, Nvidia’s upscaling technology that squeezes even better resolutions at higher frame rates from existing computing resources, but the company is now also touting RTX Neural Shaders, which use machine learning to compress textures and free up even more computing power for other things.

The 5080 and 5090 are both available later this month, while the 5070 and 5070 Ti will ship in February. Here are the prices:

  • GeForce RTX 5070 Ti – $750

  • GeForce RTX 5080 – $1,000

  • GeForce RTX 5090 – $2,000

The important thing here is that Nvidia promises big results even with the low-end budget card. All cards are said to be twice as fast on average as their respective predecessors, and Huang even claimed that this year’s $550 RTX 5070 would be just as effective in practice as the previous $1,600 RTX 4090, which is apparently based on machine learning and other optimizations.

At the higher end, Nvidia showed off graphics that promise twice the performance of the RTX 4090 compared to the newer (and only $400 more expensive) RTX 5090 in games like Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth: Wukong. The company even showed that Cyberpunk 2077 runs at more than double the frame rate with full ray tracing enabled, as you can never have too many frames when navigating the treacherous underworld of Night City.

Although the 5090 is a power hog, it’s not quite the massive big boy that its predecessor was. The Founders Edition 4090 was a three-slot card that weighed over five pounds. The 5090 will only have two slots, allowing it to fit into more compact PC builds at launch.
