NWS updates expected snow to 6 to 7 inches

A winter storm will move across north-central Arkansas, bringing heavy snow beginning late Thursday morning into Friday morning. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for the region, with accumulations of 6 to 7 inches expected in many areas. “It will be heavy, wet snow,” said National Weather Service meteorologist John Lewis. “Good for snowballing.”

The storm system moving along the Gulf Coast is distributing moisture north into a cold air mass over Arkansas. Snowfall is expected to begin after the 4th Thursday, with the heaviest rainfall occurring overnight into Friday morning. The storm is expected to ease by Friday afternoon, leaving roads treacherous and travel conditions dangerous.

“That’s the main show,” Lewis said. “Here comes the snow.”

While northern and central Arkansas will see mostly snowfall, a mix of rain, sleet and snow is forecast in southern parts of the state. Areas near the Missouri border are likely to see consistent snow throughout the event.

Temperatures will remain cold following the storm, with highs in the upper to lower 40s and lows in the upper teens to lower 20s through early next week.
