NY Giants QB option in 2025 NFL Draft?

EAST RUTHERFORD — If only there was a third quarterback the New York Giants could consider in the 2025 NFL Draft, considering they currently hold the third pick in a two-QB race, with the possibility that Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders could be off the board before Big Blue goes on the clock.

Here’s the question NFL minds are pondering, including surely the Giants: What happens if Penn State quarterback Drew Allar changes his mind?

The 20-year-old Nittany Lions quarterback has taken his game to a new level, leading his team to within two wins of the national championship in a race that continues Thursday night against Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl.

And before the College Football Playoff, Allar announced his decision to return to Happy Valley for the 2025 season. But as with everything, there is time for that to change. The deadline for underclassmen to register for this April’s draft is next Wednesday (January 15).

If Allar and Penn State manage to defeat Notre Dame and reach the CFP championship game, where they would face the winner Texas-Ohio State, the deadline for players to register is Jan. 24, four days after the title decider .

“All it takes is for a team to watch Allar win a few playoff games and say, ‘We love the progression, we like where he’s going, that’s the guy for us,'” Draft said -Analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic told NorthJersey.com “Although the work is the most important thing, sometimes subconsciously the way these guys play in big games takes precedence.”

The Giants have made it no secret that finding their next quarterback is a priority this offseason, and that came straight from the mouth of the man who signed the checks earlier this week.

“That’s obviously the main issue for us this offseason: finding the quarterback of the future,” Giants co-owner and team president John Mara said Monday, shortly after declaring that general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll would return for a fourth season. “Whether that happens through the draft or by acquiring a veteran, the decision ultimately rests with (Schoen and Daboll).”

The Giants have done extensive homework on Sanders and Ward and the class of 2025 as a whole. Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart are popular mentions for Big Blue if those two are selected by the Titans and Browns, with the two teams at 1-2.

There’s no question the Giants are familiar with Allar, the 6-foot-1, 250-pound junior whose growth and maturation has been remarkable. They drafted tight end Theo Johnson out of Penn State in the fourth round last year and have focused a lot of attention on and within James Franklin’s program.

“I have a lot of confidence in our process,” Schoen said. “We’ve been doing these quarterback deep dives over the last two or three years, and I would say the players we valued highly had solid rookie years or sophomore years, whatever it may be. So, again, a lot. “I have a lot of confidence in my staff, a lot of confidence in the coaching staff, whether it’s the draft or free agency or who we sign, that they’ll be able to do it to develop them further.”

With the Giants’ season now over, Daboll said he will begin searching for draft-eligible quarterbacks this week.

“I am extremely competitive in everything I do and I want to win and be perfect in everything I do,” Allar told reporters. “(His emotions) kind of come from that, but I also had to be conscious about it because there are good times to show those emotions and there are bad times to show them. As a quarterback you definitely have to be cool, calm, collected.”

Allar has a 23-5 record as a starter at Penn State and has thrown for more than 6,000 yards in three seasons, earning just nine picks in 820 attempts in his career. All five of those losses came against ranked opponents, including two against Ohio State.

That year, Allar threw for 3,021 yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading Penn State to a 13-2 record and a berth in the College Football Playoff semifinals against Notre Dame.

A win on Thursday would give Penn State a chance to win its first national championship since 1986.

“Allar is going to step up,” ESPN analyst Jordan Reid said of the Penn State quarterback, who turns 21 in March. “I don’t know if he’ll explain it… but if you just look at the characteristics of Allar – he’s 6-5, 240, a very strong arm, he’s agile enough, not a statue at all.” Fantasy – it’s hard , not seeing him as a man up there when he does it.

Despite these qualities, Allar remains a polarizing candidate. Although his accuracy has improved to 68% this season, he has received criticism from scouts. “Drew Allar’s portrayal may change due to the expansion of the college playoffs,” Brugler added. “If Michael Penix doesn’t have this performance against Texas last year, will he still be in the top 10? Perhaps. We’ll never know. With Drew Allar, this is a chance to really write the story. His opportunity to help himself and the way he’s viewed in this quarterback class is there.”

The stage is set Thursday night at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, and the Giants and the rest of the NFL will surely be watching — and waiting — to see if Allar thinks this is audible for his future.
