NYC mayor says suspect identified in UnitedHealth executive’s murder, NY Post reports

(Reuters) – Authorities have identified and are closing in on the man suspected of killing UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson, New York Mayor Eric Adams was quoted as saying by the New York Post on Saturday.

“The net is getting tighter,” Adams told reporters at a Police Athletic League Christmas party in Harlem, according to the Post. He declined to name the suspect.

Thompson, 50, who became CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance division in April 2021, was shot in the back around 6:45 a.m. ET (1145 GMT) on Wednesday in a targeted attack by a masked assailant who was lying in wait.

The murder occurred shortly before the company’s annual investor conference at the Hilton Hotel on Sixth Avenue.

The shooting sparked a widespread manhunt for the gunman, who fled on foot wearing a hooded jacket, balaclava and gray backpack before hopping on an electric bicycle and riding into Central Park, police said.

Adams was quoted by the Post as saying police had withheld the suspect’s name for now to deny him any advantage.

“We don’t want to publish that now,” said the mayor. “When you do this, you’re essentially tipping the person we’re looking for and we don’t want to give them the upper hand by any means. Let him continue to believe that he can hide behind the mask.

“We revealed his face,” he continued, referring to photos and videos from surveillance cameras released after the murder. “We will reveal who he is and we will bring him to justice.”

According to media reports, a backpack similar to the suspect’s was found near a playground in Central Park. MSNBC said Saturday that police examining the bag and its contents found a jacket and Monopoly money, but no firearm.

Police divers searched a pond in Central Park on Saturday for the weapon used in the murder, CNN reported, citing police sources. Reuters has not independently verified the account.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told CNN on Friday that police had collected “a huge amount of evidence,” including fingerprints, DNA evidence and camera footage of the suspect’s movements around the city.

New York police said Friday they believe the suspect left New York City after a video emerged showing him getting into a taxi that took him to a bus stop.

“We have video of him entering the Port Authority Bus Terminal. We don’t have any video of him leaving, so we assume he may have gotten on a bus,” NYPD Chief Detective Joseph Kenny told CNN. “These buses are intercity buses. That’s why we believe he may have left New York City.”

The New York Police Department has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the shooter, and the FBI has increased that reward by $50,000.

The circumstances of the attack suggested it was premeditated and planned, police said. A video showed the shooter ignoring other pedestrians while he appeared to be waiting for Thompson. The shooter’s motive is not yet known.

Security video showed the gunman behind Thompson raising his pistol and shooting at his back. Thompson, a married father of two, suffered gunshot wounds to the back and leg and was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the attack.
