Today is the 550th edition of Connectionswhich is thanks to regular editor Wyna Liu and…let me rub my eyes for a moment…illustrator Calum Heath?

I’m assuming you’ve already seen today’s game. As an exception, I will forego the exact word list because today’s grid does not contain any words. Instead, I’ll do my best to interpret and briefly describe each image before figuring out what it actually is when the game reveals the answers.

Be careful because of the word list may contain spoilers. But I think it’s important to write down my initial interpretation of each image to show my thought process for that image.

Unpacking will be interesting. So let’s get started.

(A quick thing before we begin: Heath provides the illustrations for the Connections Companion, a New York Times Column that apparently offers help for every puzzle. But as far as I know, this is the only one in the world Connections “Hints and answers” column. Hm.)

Today NYT Connections Hints and answers for Thursday, December 12th will follow soon.

How to play connections

Connections is a free, popular one New York Times daily pun. You will receive a new puzzle every day at midnight. You can play on that NYT Website or gaming app.

You will be presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to divide them into four groups of four by figuring out the connections between them. The groups can be items you can click on, names of research participants, or words preceded by a body part.

Each puzzle has only one solution, and you have to be careful when it comes to words that could fit into more than one category. You can mix up the words to perhaps better see the connections between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to understand, blue and green are in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult. The purple group often contains puns.

Select four words that you think go together and click Send. If you guess and are wrong, you lose a life. When you’re close to finding the right group, you may see a message saying you’re one word away from the right group, but you still need to figure out which word to swap.

If you make four mistakes, the game is over. Let’s make sure that this doesn’t happen with the help of some tips, and if you really find it difficult, even with today’s ones Connections Answer. Like with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have one NYT You can access the publications with the All Access or Games subscription Connections Archive. This includes every previous game from Connectionsso you can go back and play any songs you missed.

Aside from the first 60 or so games, you should be able to find my clues for each grid via Google if you need to! Simply click here and enter the date of the game for which you need hints or answers to the search query.

What are today’s sorority groups?

Do you need additional help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into this Spoiler territory.

Today Connections Groups are…

  • Yellow Group – Things that sound like “T”.
  • Green group – objects with teeth
  • Blue group – mild oaths
  • Purple group – parts of a river

What are today’s connection solutions?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today Connections Answer.

This is your final warning!

Today Connections Answers are…

  • Yellow Group – Things that sound like “T” (TEA, TEE (GOLF), TEE (SHIRT), TI (MUSICAL NOTE))
  • Green group – objects with teeth (COMB, GEAR, SAW, ZIPPER)
  • Blue group – mild oaths (FUDGE, GEEZ, NUTS, RATS)
  • Purple group – parts of a river (SHORE, BED, DELTA, MOUTH)

I can’t remember the last time I had two defeats in a row. Boo. This is what happened to me:

I was really hoping it would be easy after losing my streak yesterday. I’m actually glad I broke my streak before this game, otherwise I would have been very upset.

I managed to get the yellow ones pretty quickly. I had a general idea that the musical note should be TI, but it wasn’t until I discovered the other three that I realized it made sense to include that note.

The loud “Gs” made it clear that it was supposed to be JEEZ. This of course fits RATS and NUTS as a trio of exclamations. But the fourth word/image escaped me. The MOUTH was the only image that didn’t have a very clear meaning for me. I tried that, but I was one away from a group.

COG didn’t work either and neither did SAW or COMB. I really didn’t know. But when I saw the answer, I was annoyed that I hadn’t realized that the sundae was actually FUDGE.

I definitely should have taken the greens. That was pretty easy in hindsight. What I thought was a prism was actually a DELTA. I don’t know if I would have figured that out. But the other three shades of purple should have clarified the matter.

I really need to know how you got on with today’s game. I’ve already said I’ll add this link to the column in January, but if you have thoughts about today’s game and would like to share them, please join our Discord discussion group. (If you have any questions or problems about this, please feel free to email me.)

Phew. The 600th game should be a breeze.
