O-Zone Late Night, Week 14: Jaguars 10, Titans 6

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Good feelings are not always nice.

The Jaguars defeated their AFC South rival, the Tennessee Titans, on Sunday at Nissan Stadium – a 10-6 decision that was difficult on a cold December day. And as several players admitted afterward, exiting the postseason far too early doesn’t make it any easier.

But winning is better than losing — and the Jaguars win rarely enough in Nashville that it’s a good feeling under any circumstances.

So is it OK to forget about draft position for a night? Can we forget the conversation about coaching changes and the future of general managers on the same evening?

Can we like that quarterback Mac Jones won a start for his hometown team and that, for the first time in a long time, a few decent guys got to smile after a game?

Can we just enjoy this for one night? Can we enjoy it?

There are times when I would have traded a lot if only we could beat the Titans. I will enjoy it very much no matter how ugly it was!

That was a common feeling in the O-Zone on Sunday, and I got more of it than I perhaps expected. It was nice to see the Jaguars players celebrate this game afterward. Smiling is cooler than frowning. Good for the players. Good for the fans.

I don’t want to hear about the Jags damaging their draft slot. Give me the W!

Winning is cool. Fans like it.

Hello, John. Someone needs to remind the JAGS that Derrick Henry no longer plays for the Titans. They should be able to stop the run, but they don’t seem to be able to.

They say the Jaguars should be able to stop the run. The evidence suggests otherwise, although the Jaguars improved in that area on Sunday after a decidedly difficult start.

We still have five weeks of this?

This was the much-hyped, oft-mocked, and sometimes misspelled first email of the game. At the time, the answer was essentially “yes.” Since the release of this O-Zone Late Night, it’s no longer “yes.” Now we have four weeks left of it.

What is Mac Jones always smiling about?

He knows something you don’t know.

Hello, John. Is this the manageable part of the schedule now? This team is bad. Let’s hope for a top-three pick and a new GM. I guess we’re back in rebuilding mode.

I don’t know the Jaguars’ current mode. I know the team is bad and Sunday won’t change that. If you’re 3-10 and eliminated from the postseason with five games to go, you’re bad.

The Mac Jones interception at the end of the half was so frustrating. How hard is it to give Cam Little the opportunity to rip a 66-yarder?

I confess that I thought the same thing. As the Jaguars drove near midfield toward the end of the half, I spent a few moments thinking about how many yards they had to give up on the following play to get Jaguars rookie kicker Cam Little in range for a 67- or 68-yarder -To bring a field goal. I don’t know if he would have made it. I expect he could do it and break the NFL record of 66 yards.

In this league it’s very difficult to score when you can’t even threaten to play a pass downfield.

General Manager Trent Baalke is responsible for building this roster and works on it all year long, moving pieces around the proverbial chessboard. How can he and his staff miss out on so much when it comes to free agent signings? None of them made a significant contribution to this defense last year. What have you seen from our new signings?

The Jaguars’ 2024 free agent signings overall weren’t good enough. Center Mitch Morse was good and not enough others played well enough. To be fair to Baalke and his staff, the Jaguars’ free agent signings were much better in 2021 and 2022, with players like middle linebacker Foye Oluokun, wide receiver Christian Kirk and tight end Evan Engram becoming key players. Win some, lose some in free agency. It’s high risk with often disappointing reward.

Can we get a big prize for the winner?

A fer wins? Absolutely. Forever and ever.
