Officials issue a tornado warning for San Francisco for the first time

For the first time ever, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for San Francisco as a system raged along the coast Saturday morning, bringing damaging winds.

The National Weather Service said it received reports of downed trees and power lines across the region. As of early Saturday afternoon, it was unclear whether the damage was caused by a tornado. The National Weather Service said it was sending teams to assess the damage and determine whether a tornado touched down.

Roger Glass, a meteorologist at the weather service’s office in Monterey, California, told the Associated Press that there hasn’t been a tornado in San Francisco since 2005. That tornado had no warning before it hit the city, he told the AP.

“This was the first warning of a possible tornado in San Francisco. I would guess that there was no clear warning on the radar in 2005,” he told the AP.

There were also some damaging winds in surrounding areas. A wind gust of 83 mph was reported for San Mateo County and a wind gust of 78 mph was reported for Monterey County.

So far, the National Weather Service has confirmed five tornadoes in California in 2024. The last time there was a tornado in California in December was in 2019.
