Sources told the publication that Maco’s condition worsened after he fell into a coma. Despite doctors’ efforts, including attempts to conduct a proper brain scan and flush out toxins from his body, they were unable to revive him. TMZ added that family members flew in from out of town and were deeply shocked by the tragic death.

Maco’s final days were marred by rumors of his death circulating on the Internet. In response, his family shared an official statement on Instagram and Twitter.

“We would like to inform OG Maco’s fans, friends and supporters that he is currently in critical but stable condition. He is receiving the best possible care and we remain confident as he continues to fight,” the message said regarding his status at the time. “We kindly ask you to respect our privacy.” The announcement also made it clear that all updates would come directly from his official social media accounts. At the time of this article, there has been no confirmation regarding the rapper’s transition from these sources. (UPDATE: His family’s official confirmation can now be viewed below.)

Maco rose to fame in 2014 with the viral success of “U Guessed It” and was a vanguard member of hip hop’s legendary blogging era. His momentum earned the Quality Control graduate a coveted spot on the 2015 XXL Freshman list alongside peers like Shy Glizzy, Fetty Wap, Vince Staples and K Camp. In the years that followed, he continued to push the boundaries of music even as he struggled with flesh-eating disease and other notable health issues.
