Ohio State plays for the CFP title after Jack Sawyer’s 83-yard fumble recovery

ARLINGTON, Texas – Quinshon Judkins ran for two touchdowns before Jack Sawyer forced a fumble from his former roommate and returned it 83 yards for a score with 2:13 left as Ohio State defeated Texas 28 in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on Friday. 14 defeated Night for a chance at a sixth national title.

The Buckeyes (13-2) earned the semifinal victory in the same stadium where they were champions 10 years ago in the College Football Playoff’s debut as a four-team format. Now they have a chance to emerge victorious again in the debut of the expanded 12-team field.

Ohio State plays Orange Bowl champion Notre Dame on Jan. 20 in Atlanta. According to ESPN BET, Ohio State was the 9.5-point favorite over the Irish.

Sawyer reached Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers on a four-and-goal from the 8, knocked the ball loose and scooped it up before stumbling to the other end. It was the longest fumble return in CFP history.

Ewers and Sawyer lived in Columbus, Ohio, for a semester, and the quarterback was there before transferring to Texas and helping lead the Longhorns (13-3) to back-to-back CFP semifinals. But next season will be their 20th since they won their last national title in 2005 with Vince Young.

Texas had reached the 1, aided by two pass interference penalties in the end zone, before Quintrevion Wisner was stopped for a 7-yard loss.

Judkins had a 1-yard touchdown for a 21-14 lead with 7:02 left. That score came four plays later after quarterback Will Howard converted fourth-and-2 from the Texas 34 with a tumbling 18-yard run that nearly equaled a score.

Howard was 24 of 33 passing for 289 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Ewers went 23 of 39 for 283 yards with two TD passes to Jaydon Blue and an interception after getting the ball back one final time.
