Ohio State record, Rose Bowl history before CFP game against Oregon

Ohio State is back in the Rose Bowl.

But this time there’s more at stake for the Buckeyes: a trip to the Cotton Bowl and College Football Playoff semifinals.

No. 8 Ohio State (11-2) will face No. 1 Oregon in the 2025 Rose Bowl on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 5 p.m. ET in “The Granddaddy of Them All.”

It will be the third time – and the first since 2010 – that both the Buckeyes and Ducks will face each other at Rose Bowl Stadium. The Buckeyes are making their 17th all-time Rose Bowl appearance and second in the last three years.

Ryan Day, who is currently 3-4 in postseason play (Bowl + CFP) at Ohio State, is 1-0 in the Rose Bowl, with that win coming against Utah in 2022.

As for Ohio State, the Buckeyes will look to improve on their 9-7 overall record in Wednesday’s Rose Bowl against a tough Oregon team that beat them in Week 7.

Here’s a look at Ohio State’s record and history in the Rose Bowl ahead of Wednesday’s game against Oregon:

History of Ohio State in Rose Bowl

According to the Buckeyes’ record book, Ohio State will play in its 17th Rose Bowl on Wednesday.

It will be the third time Ohio State and Oregon have met in the Rose Bowl. The two previous meetings took place in 1958 and 2010.

Of the Buckeyes’ 17 appearances, 16 have come at Rose Bowl Stadium. The only Rose Bowl in which the Buckeyes participated but was not played at Rose Bowl Stadium was in 1921, when the game was played at Tournament Park.

Ohio State record in Rose Bowl: 9-7

Ohio State is 9-7 in its last 16 Rose Bowl appearances, with the Buckeyes claiming victories in each of their last four appearances.

The Buckeyes’ first Rose Bowl win came in 1950 with a 17-14 victory over No. 3 Cal, a win that gave Ohio State revenge for its 29-0 loss to Cal in its first Rose Bowl in 1921.

Then came one of Ohio State’s most memorable Rose Bowl appearances in 1955. After a great day of running on the field, the Buckeyes defeated the Trojans 20-7 to win their first national championship under Woody Hayes – even though UCLA and Ohio State were tied ended national championship. The Buckeyes were considered national champions ahead of the Bruins because there were no repeat national champions at that point. The win over the Trojans was also the second of four straight Rose Bowl victories for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State then participated in three bowl games in four years – 1971, 1973 and 1974 – with the latter coming against USC. Both USC and Ohio State split those two games.

The Buckeyes and Trojans met again in 1980 and 1985, two narrow losses for Ohio State. When Heisman Trophy winner Charles White was on the verge of going a perfect 12-0 in 1980, he drove USC down the field with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to secure the victory, with White himself scoring on a quarterback sneak from scored on the Buckeyes’ 1-yard line.

Another memorable moment for Ohio State at the Rose Bowl was against Arizona State in 1997. Trailing 17-14 with just 1:40 left in the fourth quarter, Buckeyes quarterback Joe Germaine hit wide receiver David Boston for a 5-yard touchdown pass, giving Ohio State its sixth Rose Bowl victory at the time.

After defeating Arizona State in 1997, Ohio State did not return to the Rose Bowl until 2010. Since then, the Buckeyes have appeared in four Rose Bowl games.

The Buckeyes last competed in the Rose Bowl in 2022 against then-Pac-12 opponent Utah. After facing a 10-0 deficit after the first quarter, CJ Stroud orchestrated a 48-45 victory for Ohio State with three touchdowns each for Marvin Harrison Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
