Just before the first round of the 2024 College Football Playoff, a heavyweight battle will take place between No. 8 Ohio State and No. 9 Tennessee. Two of the most talented teams in the country take center stage on a December evening at the Horseshoe, providing the perfect setting to conclude the first edition of on-campus playoff games.
Ohio State had a clear path to a conference title and the No. 1 overall seed. But a collapse in the final game of the season sees them drop to number 8. Ryan Day’s Buckeyes probably have the best roster in the nation. They dominated No. 10 Indiana on Nov. 23 and have national championship aspirations. A win over Tennessee prepares Ohio State for a highly anticipated rematch against Oregon, who they lost to by one point in October.
Tennessee isn’t intimidated by a hostile crowd, but a cold night game in front of more than 100,000 fans will be a completely new feeling for Josh Heupel’s Vols. Tennessee’s team is built for this. They are physical on offense, which helped running back Dylan Sampson surpass 1,500 rushing yards. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava has been up and down this season, but rushed for 299 yards and four touchdowns in his last appearance against Vanderbilt.
