Oldest Test Centurions

Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine became the third oldest player to score a Test hundred in the 21st century in the Boxing Day Test against Afghanistan in Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe plays Afghanistan in a two-Test series at home. The ongoing test in Bulawayo is only the second this year. They won the toss and elected to bat first, breaking several records in the process by posting a mammoth score.

Ben Curran, making his Test debut, scored a quick 68 off 74 balls on the opening batting, making it the sixth fastest 50-plus score by an opener on Test debut. The experienced Sean Williams then took over, coming to bat at number 4 and hitting 154 at a strike rate of 88.50, hitting ten fours and three sixes.

That wasn’t enough punishment for the Afghan bowlers as Ervine came to bat with the score at 220-4, adding to the torment. He added 163 for the fifth wicket in partnership with Williams before adding 82 with Brian Bennet for the sixth wicket. Ervine was sent off at 465-6 after scoring 104 points himself.

This was his fourth Test ton, and at the age of 39 years and 130 days, he became the third oldest to score a Test hundred in the 21st century, after Misbah-ul-Haq and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. In total, Misbah and Chanderpaul have scored eight hundreds between them, which is older than Ervine at the time of scoring this century. Seven of these eight belong to Misbah, who is also five hundred over 40 years old, and only one belongs to Chanderpaul.

Ervine’s accomplice Sean Williams also made it onto this list thanks to his 154 points. Currently 38 years and 92 days old, Williams is the third oldest in the 21st century to score 150 or more in a test. Younis Khan has two 150+ scores that are older while Chanderpaul has one.

The oldest player to ever score a Test century is England’s Jack Hobbs, who scored 142 against Australia in 1929 at the age of 46 years and 82 days.
