Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin isn’t afraid to criticize the state of college football.

Kiffin particularly complained about the transfer portal situation. Just because he can do it well doesn’t mean it’s flawless.

With the transfer portal window opening on December 9th, some players planning to move in the postseason have been presented with an impossible suggestion: exit the postseason or enter the portal early enough to avoid losing roster spots (and NIL -opportunities) dry up.

Ole Miss (9-3) plays Duke (9-3) in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Thursday (6:30 p.m., ESPN) at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Gator Bowl is an example of this predicament. After a record-breaking season, Blue Devils quarterback Maalik Murphy transferred from Duke.

“It’s not the kids’ fault,” Kiffin said Wednesday. “It’s the system’s fault. Sometimes you can get upset with the children. It’s not her fault at all.”

Kiffin spoke at length about the situation in a joint press conference with Duke coach Manny Diaz. Kiffin has previously advocated for changing the window in which the transfer portal is open.

Kiffin, who coached the Oakland Raiders from 2007 to 2008, says the NFL model makes more sense.

“We’re still playing,” Kiffin said. “You wouldn’t create a system in any professional sport – professional athletes have this figured out – where you have free rein right at the end of the regular season before the postseason. With all the manipulation that’s been talked about and stuff, that’s what it brings with it. “Children’s heads during the season, they go to other places.
