Oleksandr Usyk beats Tyson Fury again and defends his world heavyweight title

Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury and defended his unified world heavyweight title with another impressive points victory in the rematch in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Usyk defeated Fury for the first time in May to become boxing’s first four-belt heavyweight champion. He prevailed again, scoring a 116-112 lead on all three judges’ lists.

The win extends Usyk’s professional record to 23 wins and zero losses and he could now face Daniel Dubois to regain the IBF title that was stripped from him earlier this year.

Fury, on the other hand, is at a crossroads and his promoter Frank Warren said after the fight that it was “too early to say” whether the 36-year-old would now retire from the sport.

Fury possessed a 15cm advantage in height, 20cm reach and four stone weight over Usyk and made his physicality count in the early rounds.

And the former champion appeared to rock the reigning king with a straight right hand in the second round.

But just like in the first fight, Usyk continued to target Fury’s body and eventually slowed the challenger down by peppering him with shots.

Still, it felt like the battle in the championship rounds was almost over. But Usyk upped the ante and landed a series of flashy combinations, ultimately winning the contest by a comfortable margin.

“He (Tyson Fury) is a great fighter, he is a great opponent. Incredible 24 laps for my career. Thank you very much,” Usyk said afterwards.

The Ukrainian was then confronted in the ring by Daniel Dubois – the Brit he defeated in August 2003 – who demanded a second fight. “I want my revenge,” Dubois said.

Usyk quickly agreed to his challenge. With a second win over Dubois, Usyk would regain the IBF title, which he lost after his first loss to Fury.

Usyk was stripped of the title because he did not fight the IBF mandatory challenger and instead sought a rematch with Fury, who left the ring without doing an interview after his second career defeat.
