Olympian Fred Kerley was arrested after being verbally abused in an argument with police

Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley was arrested and charged with assault after a confrontation with police in Miami Beach, according to multiple reports.

Local Miami news stations WSVN and NBC Miami reported that Kerley, 29, allegedly approached police officers at the scene of an ongoing investigation on Thursday evening, January 2nd.

The Team USA sprinter reportedly expressed concern about his car, which was parked near the crime scene police were investigating in the 100 block of 9th Street.

According to NBC, authorities used a stun gun on him after they said Kerley’s “behavior became increasingly aggressive” and he refused officers’ requests to leave the scene.

Police also described Kerley taking a “fighting stance” during the altercation with officers.

In body camera footage obtained by NBC, an officer can be seen placing a hand on Kerley’s chest before a struggle ensues. Several police officers appeared to wrestle Kerley to the ground and one officer struck the sprinter several times, according to NBC’s report on the footage.

Kerley’s girlfriend was also reportedly at the scene and yelled at officers to stop during the scuffle, according to NBC. “He’s an athlete, please don’t mess with him,” the woman screamed.

The outlet said in the footage, officers can be heard asking Kerley to stop resisting “for several moments” before an officer threatened to taser the sprinter.

According to WSVN, officers called for emergency assistance during the incident.

After being verbally abused, Kerley reportedly fell to the ground before telling officers in the footage that they were “weak.” “You put your hands on me and hit me in the head,” Kerley said, according to NBC.

Kerley is now charged with assault on a police officer, correctional officer or firefighter, resisting an officer without violence and disorderly conduct.

Kerley won the silver medal in the men’s 100 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and bronze in the same event at the 2024 Paris Games. He was also a member of the men’s relay team that won the 4×100 meters in Paris won medal.
