Omaha cancellations ahead of predicted freezing rain

Roads remained icy across Omaha Friday evening and officials urged residents to stay home as freezing rain was expected to continue overnight.

According to the National Weather Service, 0.1 to 0.25 inches of ice accumulation is expected in Omaha.

As temperatures rise, precipitation is expected to transition to rain around 3 or 4 a.m. Saturday, according to Clint Aegerter, a meteorologist at the weather service’s Valley office.

The weather service warned that cold road temperatures could cause ice to stick, even if air temperatures rise above freezing.

Aegerter urged anyone planning to be out and about on Friday evening to check road conditions before setting off and to drive carefully, especially on bridges and driveways.

“When you go out, take it slow,” he said. “Roads that look wet could essentially be a layer of ice.”

According to a statement from Douglas County 911 Director Kathy Allen, Douglas County was inundated with emergency calls related to the freezing weather on Friday evening. Allen urged residents to stay home and avoid driving until conditions improve.

“Their cooperation is critical to preventing further accidents and ensuring the safety of our entire community,” Allen said.

According to the weather service, the wintry weather contributed to traffic slowdowns on Interstate 80 between Omaha and Lincoln and on Interstate 29 from Council Bluffs south to Highway 2.

Multiple accidents were reported in the Omaha area Friday evening. According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, I-80 westbound at Highway 370 was closed as of 6:30 p.m. due to a crashed semi-truck blocking the road.

Emergency scanner traffic also indicated reports of multiple accidents across Omaha.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced just before 7 p.m. that it would only respond to accidents involving injuries or cars that could not be moved due to the “numerous” accidents reported to law enforcement Friday evening.
