One million taxpayers will receive IRS stimulus payments. See if you qualify.

  • These payments are intended for those who were eligible for the refund credit in 2021 but did not use it.
  • Eligible taxpayers do not need to take any action to receive the payment.
  • Payments will be distributed by direct deposit or check by the end of January.

A check from the Internal Revenue Service aims to make the end of the holiday season a little more environmentally friendly for a million taxpayers.

The Internal Revenue Service announced Friday that about $2.4 billion in stimulus checks will be distributed to some taxpayers in the coming weeks.

Internal data reviewed by the IRS found that many people who filed a tax return in 2021 had not claimed the recovery credit, prompting the IRS to issue a series of automatic “special payments.”

“When we looked at our internal data, we found that one million taxpayers had failed to claim this complex credit even though they were actually eligible,” IRS Commissioner Danney Werfel said in a statement. “To minimize hassle and make this money available to eligible taxpayers, we are making these payments automatically, meaning these individuals do not have to go through the extensive process of filing an amended tax return to receive them.”
