OpenAI has finally released Sora

OpenAI on Monday launched Sora, its text-to-video AI model, as part of its 12-day “ship-mas” product release series The edge previously reported that this would be the case. It’s available now on Sora.com for ChatGPT subscribers in the US and “most other countries,” and there’s also a new model, Sora Turbo. This updated model adds features such as generating videos from text, animating images, and remixing videos.

With a ChatGPT Plus subscription, OpenAI says you can generate up to 50 priority videos (1,000 credits) with resolutions up to 720p and durations of 5 seconds. The $200 per month ChatGPT Pro subscription, launched last week, includes “unlimited generations” and up to 500 priority videos, while increasing the resolution to 1080p and the duration to 20 seconds. The more expensive plan also allows subscribers to download videos without watermarks and do up to five generations at a time.

OpenAI first introduced its text-to-video AI model Sora in February, and today Marques Brownlee, aka MKBHD, confirmed the launch with a preview based on his experience testing Sora so far.

During the livestream, OpenAI showcased Sora’s new Explore page with a feed of AI-generated videos created by other community members. The company highlighted a feature called Storyboards that lets you create videos based on a sequence of prompts and convert photos into videos. OpenAI also demonstrated a “remix” tool that allows you to tweak Sora’s output with a text prompt, as well as a way to “mix” two scenes with AI.

According to OpenAI, videos generated with Sora will have visible watermarks and C2PA metadata to indicate that they were created with AI. Before uploading an image or video to Sora, OpenAI requires you to tick an agreement stating that what you upload does not contain anyone under the age of 18, does not contain any explicit or violent content, and does not contain any copyrighted material. It states that “misuse of media uploads” could result in account suspension or suspension.

“As OpenAI, we obviously have a big goal ahead of us,” Aditya Ramesh, vice president of research at OpenAI, said during the livestream. “We want to prevent Sora from engaging in illegal activity, but we also want to balance that with creative expression. We know that… will be a constant challenge, we may not get it perfect on day one. We’ll start a little conservatively, and if our moderation doesn’t quite get it right, just give us your feedback.”

If you don’t have a ChatGPT subscription, you can still browse the feed of AI-generated videos created by other Sora users. While the model will be available in the US and many other countries today, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said it could be “a while” before it is rolled out in “most of Europe and the UK.”

The release of Sora comes just a week after a group of artists claiming to be part of the company’s alpha testing program released the product in protest against its use by OpenAI for allegedly “unpaid research, development and PR.”
