OpenAI whistleblower found dead in an apartment in San Francisco in an apparent suicide attempt

A former OpenAI employee and whistleblower, Suchir Balaji, was recently found dead in his apartment in San Francisco, California.

The San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified 26-year-old Balaji as the deceased, according to the San Jose Mercury News. The manner of death was determined to be suicide.

The coroner said he had notified Balaji’s family.

Balaji was found dead in his Buchanan Street apartment on November 26, a San Francisco Police Department spokesperson told the outlet. First responders were called to his home to conduct a wellness check and the initial investigation found no evidence of foul play.

“We are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news today, and our condolences go out to Suchir’s loved ones during this difficult time,” an OpenAI spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

This came after Balaji, an AI researcher, raised concerns that OpenAI was violating copyright law in an interview with The New York Times in October.

Balaji resigned from OpenAI after working there for nearly four years when he learned that the technology would do more harm than good to society, he told the newspaper, noting that his main concern was how it would be used the company allegedly uses copyrighted data, and stated that he believes its practices harm the Internet.

“I have been at OpenAI for almost 4 years and have been working on ChatGPT for the last 1.5 years,” Balaji wrote on the social media platform but.” I’m curious after seeing all the lawsuits filed against GenAI companies.

“As I tried to better understand the issue, I eventually came to the conclusion that fair use seems to be a fairly implausible defense for many generative AI products, for the reason that they can create substitute products that are compatible with the Data being competed,” his post continued.

OpenAI and Microsoft are currently facing multiple lawsuits from media companies accusing OpenAI of violating copyright law.
