“Oppenheimer’s” Emma Dumont is transmasculine, non-binary

Actress Emma Dumont has embraced her gender identity and adopted a new name in her personal life while keeping the name Emma professionally.

She is best known for her role as J. Robert Oppenheimer’s sister-in-law Jackie in Christopher Nolan’s 2024. Best Picture Winner “Oppenheimer,” the 30-year-old star of “The Gifted,” subtly shared the update on his Instagram account, listing the changed pronouns “they/them” and a new name, Nick, in his bio.

A representative for Dumont did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment Friday.

Dumont is keeping the handle @emmadumont on social media, a decision her publicist explained to TMZ.

“You identify as a transmasculine, non-binary person,” the publicist told the outlet. “Their working name will continue to be Emma Dumont, but to friends and family they will be called Nick.”

Transmasculine is a term for a person who is “closer to masculinity than femininity, but not a binary man,” according to the National PFLAG Glossary. It is often abbreviated to “transmasc”.

Now the term “nonbinary” is often used by those “who do not subscribe to the gender binary,” says the organization’s glossary. It also states that “some use the term exclusively, while others may use it interchangeably with terms such as genderqueer, genderfluid, gender nonconforming, gender diverse, or gender expansive.”

A 2021 study by the UCLA Williams Institutewhich addresses issues surrounding sexual orientation and gender identities, has found that non-binary people make up about 11% of the adult LGBTQ population. And although they make up a large portion of the national transgender population (43%), the study concludes that most non-binary LGBTQ adults are not transgender.

Fans left supportive comments on Dumont’s Monday Instagram post, with one commenter wishing the actor one “I’m excited to get out.”

“I love this for you!” another user wrote.

Other celebrities to come out last year included the breakthrough Uncut Gems. Julia Fox and R&B singer Khalid.

Prior to “Oppenheimer,” Dumont also appeared in the NBC series “Aquarius” and the 2021 film “Licorice Pizza.” They are also set to star in the horror film “New Me,” whose release date is yet to be announced.
