INDIANAPOLIS – Oregon and Penn State combined for seven touchdowns, 537 yards, 28 first downs and 55 points in the Big Ten title game on Saturday night.

That was in the first half.

The top-seeded Ducks entered halftime with a 31-24 lead. The 55 points broke a title game first half record held by Nebraska and Wisconsin, who combined for 52 points in 2012.

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel had 157 yards and three touchdowns at halftime. Penn State’s Drew Allar had thrown for 154 yards and two scores.

The teams needed just a touch more than 28 minutes to overcome the over/under for the entire game: 51 points.

Despite all this offense, the teams combined for three punts. Oregon also forced a turnover. Dontae Manning grabbed Allar and returned him to the Penn State 1 for a touchdown early in the second, making it 28-10.

Still, this half will not be remembered for the defense — a reality best illustrated by a gassed Penn State linebacker Kobe King leaning over and throwing up in his end zone in the first quarter while the Ducks were playing their second Quarters played TD.
