Oregon defeats Penn State to win Big Ten title

Dillon Gabriel felt like he and Oregon were a “perfect” fit when he decided to transfer there, and on Saturday night he proved his instincts were right.

The top-ranked Ducks remained undefeated despite No. 3 Penn State making a mighty attempt to win the Big Ten, 45-37.

The Ducks led by as many as 18 points in the first half and scored touchdowns on four of their first five drives. Penn State chipped ahead to get back within four points, but after getting back to within 14 points midway through the third quarter, Oregon seemed to have all the momentum with a 38-24 lead.

The Nittany Lions weren’t dead yet, however, as Kaytron Allen had runs of 32 and 26 yards on one drive and finished the job with a one-yard score. However, James Franklin decided to be aggressive and go for two, but their version of the Philly Special was unsuccessful.

The Oregon offense did its usual thing after that, launching a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a Jordan James touchdown, his second, to take a 45-30 lead with 7:28 left.

But Penn State stayed alive – on 4th-and-10, Drew Allar narrowly escaped a sack and fired one into the end zone, tying the score to make the eight-point game – then they forced a three-and -Out of. But Allar went deep and was picked off. Oregon was able to secure the title with a first down as Penn State ran out of timeouts.

Tez Johnson had a day, catching 11 passes for a Big Ten championship-record 181 yards and a touchdown. Dillon Dabriel completed 22 of his 32 passes for 283 yards and four scores.

Oregon will most likely be the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, and despite the loss, Penn State is certainly in the running to host a first-round game. They will find out their fate early Sunday afternoon.
