Packers take care of Seahawks to retain playoff spot; Geno Smith left the game with a knee injury

The Green Bay Packers won a decisive victory over the Seattle Seahawks (30:13) on Sunday evening, improving their playoff chances.

The Packers went 10-4 this year, maintaining their spot in the wild card race.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks fell out of first place in the NFC West as their 8-6 record allows the Los Angeles Rams to move past them based on the current tiebreaker.

The Packers got off to a hot start after suffering a tough loss to their division opponent, the Detroit Lions, last week.

It was star running back Josh Jacobs who found some big holes that his offensive line was creating in the Seahawks’ defense that allowed him to gain a total of 42 yards and eventually a one-yard touchdown run in the end zone for a quick 7-0 lead.

Then on the next drive, Packers quarterback Jordan Love threw a quick pass to Romeo Doubs for the 13-yard touchdown.

Meanwhile, Geno Smith’s offense didn’t have the same success as they only scored three points in the first half.

That included an interception by Smith in the red zone on third-and-nine at Green Bay’s 14-yard line as he waited for tight end Noah Fant, but Carrington Valentine skipped the route to pick him off.

However, in the second half, the Seattle defense stymied the Packers’ solid running game, eventually leading to a series of three-and-out plays to give the Seahawks a chance to get back into the game.

Then Smith was injured after attempting a pass midway through the third quarter, and when he hit his helmet on the sideline, it became apparent that he was clearly injured.

Sam Howell, the Washington Commanders’ starting quarterback in 2023, took his place under center and took over the rest of the way with Smith out with a knee injury.

The Seahawks were able to find the end zone in the fourth quarter when Zach Charbonnet, once again taking over the starting role for the injured Kenneth Walker III, got the right blocks and sprinted 24 yards to make the game 23-13.

However, it was too little, too late as the Packers held off Howell and took the win.

The nail in the coffin was Doubs’ second touchdown catch of the game, and it was a terrific one as he picked it up off the turf in the back of the end zone for a six-count.

A look at the stats shows that Love finished the game 20 of 27 for 229 yards with his two touchdowns, while Jacobs had 94 rushing yards on 26 carries and 42 yards through the air on four catches with his rushing score to seal the game open.
