Panthers RB Jonathon Brooks tears the ACL in his right knee again

Carolina Panthers rookie running back Jonathon Brooks tore the ACL in his right knee during Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles for the second time in 13 months, coach Dave Canales announced Monday.

Brooks suffered the injury on a non-contact play in the first quarter at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Brooks tore his ACL on November 11, 2023 in the Longhorns’ 29-26 win over TCU. The Panthers, who fell to 3-10 with their third straight narrow loss on Sunday, still felt good enough about Brooks to select him in the second round of the 2024 draft.

Brooks spent the entire preseason and first nine games rehabilitating the injury before making his NFL debut three games ago in a 30-27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He had two runs for 7 yards in that game and six for 18 the following week in an overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while playing behind Chuba Hubbard.

He injured his knee against Philadelphia on his only run, resulting in a loss of 3 yards.

Canales said Brooks will undergo surgery “at some point” to repair his injury, but he wasn’t sure if that would be later this month.

“My heart goes out to him,” Canales added. “I mean, just the amount of hard work he put in to get back to this place and get him to play.” He’s heartbroken. I am heartbroken. The whole group just felt for him.

“We will be with him every step of the way and support him along the way. He knows how to do it. He’ll be able to attack it and his focus will shift in terms of what he’s competing for.”‘

Asked if 2026 was a realistic goal for Brooks to be ready for a full return, Canales said: “I really don’t know. You have to go in there and look at everything. I’m sure we will.” “After the operation, more information will come out and so on.”

Canales said the team will try to sign another running back. Chuba Hubbard was the only healthy player on the roster after Sunday’s game.

Raheem Blackshear was taken to a Philadelphia hospital with a chest injury. He is listed as the everyday starter for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Mike Boone would be next off the practice squad.
