Three weeks after returning from a torn cruciate ligament, Jonathon Brooks is injured again.

The Carolina Panthers’ rookie running back slipped to the turf with a non-contact knee injury against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday and limped to the sideline. Eventually he was taken to the locker room on a cart. The Panthers considered his return doubtful due to a knee injury.

The injury is a blow to the promising rookie, who the Panthers selected in the second round of April’s draft out of Texas.

The injury occurred in the first quarter when the game ended scoreless. Brooks slipped on a cut on the grass and was in significant pain. He tried to walk to the sideline but fell again before he could make it.

Brooks was one of the best running backs in college football at Texas and was considered a potential first-round pick. He tore a cruciate ligament in his right knee in November of last season and fell to the Panthers in the second round (No. 46) in the April draft. Despite his injury, he was still the first running back off the board in the draft.

Brooks sat out Carolina’s first 10 games while recovering from his injury before making his NFL debut in Week 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs. He ran eight times for 25 yards in two games, supporting Chuba Hubbard. Now, three games after his pro debut, Brooks may be facing another extended absence.

With Brooks injured, Hubbard will once again take over Bell’s role as Carolina’s running back.
