Indian Paralympic gold medalist Sumit Antil has set itself the goal of achieving one 80 meter mark in javelin throw within the next few years. This announcement follows his outstanding performance at the Paris Paralympics, where he secured his second gold medal in a row with a record-breaking throw 70.59 m.

The Gold medalist at the Tokyo Paralympics dominated the F64 javelin final in Paris in September, breaking the Paralympic record twice and securing the top spot on the podium. Speaking on GoSports Foundation Annual Sports Awards Night 2024 On Monday in Mumbai, Antil shared his journey and goals.

“Before the 2021 Paralympics in Tokyo, I announced my goal of reaching the 70-meter mark at a press conference. Many doubted it and said it was impossible for a Paralympian. But within 1.5 years I reached this milestone at the World Championships. Now my dream is to reach 80 meters in the coming years.” he said, according to a press release.

The GoSports Foundation Annual Sports Awards Night 2024 honored several famous athletes for their contributions and achievements in sports. Reflecting on her journey, she said: “Coming from a conservative Muslim family where girls are often expected to stay home and get married, my father, an athlete himself, thought differently. He supported me from the beginning. However, my mother was afraid that no one would marry my sisters and me. I assured her that once I succeeded, there would be a line of suitors outside our door!”

Her words highlighted the challenges she overcame and the determination that fueled her success.

Sreeja Akula’s persistence and triumph

Table tennis star Sreeja Akula also shared her inspiring journey. “From a young age, I dreamed of representing India and winning medals. Achieving this took years of dedication, resilience and support. My inspiration was my sister, who was an excellent athlete but had to give up due to financial reasons. Her story motivated me to get serious about table tennis. Although my parents were initially hesitant as I excelled in Class 12 with 96%, they eventually supported my passion, along with my coach and organizations like GoSports Foundation.”

Their journey is a testament to the role that perseverance, family support and financial support play in achieving athletic dreams.

Awards for exceptional contributions and emerging talent

Suhas Yathiraj, silver medalist at the Tokyo and Paris Paralympics, received the award Award for outstanding contribution to the community and sport for his commitment and achievements.
