Party City’s closure inspires ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ memes

For some, the party is ending too soon after Party City abruptly closed its U.S. stores after 40 years in business.

Aside from the company reportedly laying off all employees with immediate effect with no severance pay or benefits, the company’s closure also came as a surprise to loyal customers who expressed their shock on social media.

“Party City is shutting down, Big Lots is shutting down, government is shutting down,” one person wrote on X. “My knees are shutting down. My metabolism slows down. I can’t win if I lose.”

“The closure of Party City is the perfect omen for America and the new administration right now,” mused another in a post.

But the majority of pop culture followers responded to the news with a classic RuPaul’s Drag Race Moment. The scene occurred in the 2012 episode when that season’s winner, Sharon Needles, called Phi Phi O’Hara a “tired showgirl,” setting off one of the most iconic quotes in the 16-season reality competition series.

“At least I’m a showgirl, bitch,” O’Hara shouted in the Werk Room. “Go back to Party City where you belong!”

One person shared the scene on X and wrote: “RIP Party City. They cared for all the girls in times of need.”

“The kids won’t even understand, ‘Go back to party town where you belong,'” another wrote with crying emojis. “The scriptures are being obliterated before our eyes.”

“Where will @SHARON_NEEDLES go now,” one fan asked, while another wrote, “Someone check on Sharon Needles.”

Party City CEO Barry Litwin told store employees in a video briefing Friday that this would be their last day, according to CNN. Some employees received letters informing them that the stores would close on February 28, after which they would be laid off.
