Patrick Mahomes' grip skills were on display again against the Chargers

Patrick Mahomes is not only the best quarterback in the NFL, he is also the strongest quarterback. Was there ever any doubt that he wouldn’t lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a win against the Los Angeles Chargers?

Not at all.

With 4:45 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Mahomes completed his seventh game-winning drive of the season, helping the Chiefs to a 19-17 victory over the Chargers.

Mahomes and the Chiefs converted three third downs on a game-winning possession. The final third-down conversion was another reminder of why the Chiefs are back-to-back Super Bowl champions and have won nine straight AFC West titles.

On third-and-seven with two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs needed a first down to use time to make a game-winning field goal. Mahomes ran a naked bootleg to the right, evaded Chargers linebacker Daiyan Henley and threw a nine-yard pass to tight end Travis Kelce for a first down.

The successful third-down conversion exemplified why Mahomes is so special. He makes clutch plays and wants to get his team to victory.

“I mean, I trust Pat to make plays like that. “He kind of said that before the game, just, ‘I’m going to make something happen,’ so he has an opportunity to run, an opportunity to throw back and then everyone comes to him on that,” Chiefs said. The Chiefs managed to run the clock down to just one second. Then kicker Matthew Wright, replacing injured kicker Harrison Butker, hit a game-winning 31-yard field goal that went off the upright and through.

It was Kansas City’s 10th^Th Winning by one point this season. Five of their wins came by a margin of three points or less. They have won 15 consecutive games decided by one point or less (including playoffs), the longest streak in the NFL.

Football is the ultimate team sport. The Chiefs defense is one of the stingiest units in the NFL. But the Chiefs just happen to have the best and most productive player at the most important position in football.

“As long as we have a chance to go out there, play football and make a game happen, I feel like we can do it,” Mahomes said.

Mahomes has 3,189 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this year. He’s not having an outstanding statistical season by his standards. But Mahomes is the deciding factor for Kansas City in a league in which 99 games have been decided by six points or fewer (before the Cincinnati Bengals-Dallas Cowboys game on Monday). He’s the reason the Chiefs won the AFC West again and are trying to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls.
