Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs suffers an ankle injury in the game against the Browns

CLEVELAND — Minutes after he left Sunday’s game with a right ankle injury, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he was unclear whether he would play next Saturday against the Houston Texans.

“It’s hard to say right now,” Mahomes said after the Chiefs’ 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns. “You still get an adrenaline rush and it’s usually the day after, so to speak, that you get a good feeling about it.” I feel like I could have finished the game under different circumstances, but I thought the smart decision was to use Carson Wentz.

“…You just do what you have to do to get back, and I think that’s the most important thing. And now we’re just going to go back to the rehab part, the treatment part, and try to get ready for a short week against a good football team.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Mahomes’ ankle was not broken.

“It hurts and he’ll start the rehab part over time and then we’ll just have to see how he does down the road,” Reid said.

Mahomes was removed midway through the fourth quarter after being hit on an incomplete fourth-down pass. The Chiefs had a 21-7 lead at that point and Wentz finished the game. Mahomes remained on the sideline until the end of the game, limping as he left the field for the locker room.

Reid also said Mahomes could have stayed in the game, adding, “That wasn’t necessary.”

“He wanted to fight for it, but we have a good support behind him in Carson and it was good to give him a few reps there as well and let our guys hear that snap in case he had to go,” Reid said.

During the play, Mahomes was pulled to the ground from behind by Cleveland defender Dalvin Tomlinson and at the same time hit high by Mike Hall.

“I tried to run into the pocket, obviously on fourth down, to make a play,” Mahomes said. “And when I threw the ball, I kind of got hit – and I didn’t see it – but it felt like someone hit me from behind too. That’s what happens in football, and so I tried to get back on my feet to come, but of course it hurt a little. But now we’re just getting past the rehab part and trying to be ready for next week.

“I thought the defense played really well and I wanted to go back out there and I probably would have fought a little harder if they had gotten the game to a point (lead). But I have a lot.” I also have confidence in Carson. … We put him out there and I thought he did a great job running down the clock and putting us in a position to win the football game.

Mahomes was 19 of 38 for 159 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game. According to ESPN Research, Mahomes was hit on multiple pass attempts and was pressured 21 times.

“You just have to trust the offense,” Mahomes said. “… I just have to do a better job of going through my progressions and trusting the offense, getting the ball out of my hands and letting the guys make plays. And it’s in my nature to try to make the big play happen. And sometimes defenses stop that, and then when it’s not there, you reach for the things underneath and keep them moving.”

On each of the two possessions before the injury, the Chiefs went three-and-out with a two-touchdown lead with six incomplete passes, which led to Reid defending his play after the game.

“You have to be able to throw the ball in this league,” Reid said. “Some of our runs haven’t worked that well either, so we need to make sure we clean that up and get it going.” “I can give him (better plays) there and do a better job for him there.”
