Patrick Mahomes plays through an ankle sprain to lead the Chiefs to victory against the Texans

Patrick Mahomes remains undefeated due to ankle injuries.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback took the field Saturday and battled through a sprained ankle to earn a 27-19 victory over the Houston Texans. Mahomes passed for 260 yards with one touchdown pass and one touchdown run.

Mahomes never had a guarantee that he would play after leaving last Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns with a sprain. But it didn’t even stop him from missing every practice this week, as Mahomes went through his typical routine despite the injury.

It was familiar territory for the three-time Super Bowl champion. Mahomes suffered a sprained ankle in the 2022 playoffs, returning from injury to beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship and playing two weeks later to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Mahomes’ most recent ankle sprain is said to be mild and typically takes another two to four weeks to fully heal. However, Mahomes has proven to be a player who returns from injury quicker than expected.

The last time Mahomes missed a game due to injury was in 2019, when he missed just two games after dislocating a patella against the Denver Broncos.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters during the week that he was “amazed” by his quarterback’s ability to return from injury so quickly.

“I’ve been through it with him before and he surprises me every time he does it,” Reid said. “He’s so mentally strong. It’s a state of mind with which he goes into it. Where he was a few days ago, I would probably say it was a long shot. He did a good job.”

Mahomes, on the other hand, underpromised and overstated his availability this week. He suggested to reporters on Tuesday that he would not play unless he felt his injury would “not limit the game plan.”

“I don’t want to limit the game plan,” Mahomes said. “That’s a different thing for me. I want to be able to still move around the pocket so we’re not sitting in one spot the whole game and leading the D-line to chase them. So it’s about I find that balance and see where I’m at and like I said, I won’t know until the end of this week.

But with the win, Mahomes and the Chiefs move closer to history. For vanity’s sake, they won their 16th straight game by one possession, breaking a tie against the 2004 New England Patriots.

More importantly, they are just one win away from securing the No. 1 spot in the AFC. That would give the Chiefs a first-round bye and home-field advantage heading to the Super Bowl.

Mahomes and Co. want to become the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row. Their path there only got shorter with Mahomes’ recent exploits.
