Patrick Mahomes reflected on Travis Kelce's extraordinary career after he broke Tony Gonzalez's previous record of 76 career touchdowns

On Christmas Day, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce used the holiday to rewrite history by watching a live game on Netflix in which the Chiefs defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-10. 1 seed in the playoffs. Kelce broke Tony Gonzalez’s record for most touchdowns in Chiefs history. His relationship with Patrick Mahomes gave him eight receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown, breaking the club record.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce broke Tony Gonzalez’s franchise record for career touchdown receptions with the 76-man team by catching a 12-yard touchdown pass from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on a 29th :10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth quarter.

“He’s done so much for this organization, on and off the field,” Mahomes said of Kelce after the game. “For him, the career he had is special. I know at the end of the day he wants to win the ring more than anything, but it’s great that he can achieve this.”
“I was extremely excited,” Mahomes told the media after the game. “I’ve been trying to get him a touchdown the last few weeks and I wanted to do it at Arrowhead…I’m glad we got it done in the regular season and now we can just play football.”
Kelce broke a 17-week touchdowns record during the 2024 season despite having 74 career touchdowns. Kelce caught his third touchdown of the season as the Chiefs defeated Arrowhead, tying Gonzalez’s record for receiving touchdowns at home. Mahomes hoped Kelce would break the record at Arrowhead Stadium.
“It’s everything for me,” Kelce said after the game when asked about the win. “Tony has been a mentor to me … and it’s just an honor to even be in conversation with him.” He is now the Chiefs’ franchise leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns, passing Gonzalez in all of those categories. In his 12-year NFL career, he has caught 1,004 passes for 12,151 yards and 77 touchdowns, while Gonzalez is at the top of every category, a product of his time with the Atlanta Falcons rather than the Kansas City Chiefs.
Gonzalez is the NFL’s all-time leader in receptions with 1,325 and career receiving yards with 15,127. Antonio Gates is the all-time leading touchdown receiver. Kelce’s rankings place him third in career receptions and yards and fifth in touchdowns. No matter how great Kelce is as a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest tight ends the NFL has ever seen, he still has a long way to go before he approaches Gonzalez or Gates’ respective records.
