“Patriots strip defender of captaincy after off-field issues”

FOXBORO, Mass. – The Patriots made a notable change ahead of their matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Jabrill Peppers appears to be no longer a captain.

New England took the field for pregame warmups in their throwback red jerseys, but in another notable update to the uniform, Peppers’ captain patch was removed from his jersey. The Patriots made no other changes, with safety Kyle Dugger, quarterback Jacoby Brissett, tight end Hunter Henry and defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. all keeping their changes.

Peppers, who is returning to the lineup after missing the last seven games, was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list on Oct. 9 after appearing in Quincy District Court facing multiple charges, including assault and battery with one dangerous weapon. The NFL will continue to investigate the 29-year-old as his trial date is set for January 22nd.

Peppers’ lawyers have strongly denied the allegations against him.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was asked whether Peppers would remain captain upon his return to practice this week and told reporters that he would have the conversation “in house.”

Peppers is expected to start alongside Kyle Dugger.
