Paul Mescal sings and parodies “Wicked” in musical sketch “Gladiator II” on “SNL”

Paul Mescal defies gravity!

The 28-year-old actor made his Saturday Night Live Debuted on December 7th when he hosted the late night comedy sketch series with Shaboozey as the musical guest.

Mescal was recently released in a sketch Gladiator II was reimagined as a musical following the success of Evil And Moana 2.

In his role as Lucius Verus Aurelius, Mescal showed off his singing skills by saying throughout the parody, “There’s no place like Rome.”

At the end of the sketch, Mescal is seen flying away from the Colosseum on a broomstick and wearing a witch’s hat while doing his own rendition of Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba riff Evilis the iconic “Defying Gravity” number.

Elsewhere in the episode, Mescal starred in a number of other skits, including one in which he played a college student who surprises his parents with a new earring and another in which he appeared in a commercial for a Italian restaurant takes part.

He also starred in another skit in which he portrayed a pirate stripper at a club hosting a bachelor party.

In his first musical appearance, 29-year-old Shaboozey performed “Good News,” which was released on November 15th.

He then sang his track “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” in his second set. The song recently tied Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” for the longest-running number one song of all time in the US billboard Hot 100 with 19 weeks at the top.

SNL announced the cast for season 50 earlier this year.

Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim and Jane Wickline have been added to the sketch comedy show’s roster, while Punkie Johnson, Chloe Troast and Molly Kearney have all stepped down. Meanwhile, returning cast members Marcello Hernandez, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker were promoted to the main cast after each two years as leads.

Michael Che, Colin Jost, James Austin Johnson, Bowen Yang, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman and Kenan Thompson round out the rest of the cast.

Next comes the host SNL is Chris Rock with musical guest Gracie Abrams on December 14th and Martin Short with musical guest Hozier on December 21st.

Saturday Night Live airs this weekend on NBC.
