Peabody, MA, Injuries from New Year’s Balloon Release at In the Game Arcade – NBC Boston

Ten people were injured Tuesday at a family-oriented New Year’s event at an arcade in Peabody, Massachusetts, when a toy construction set fell on spectators, according to fire officials. The incident was captured on video.

According to Peabody Fire Chief John Dowling, all 10 injuries were minor, but eight people, five of them children, were taken to local hospitals; two refused to leave.

The collapse occurred as employees at the In the Game arcade on Lowell Street attempted to conduct a “Noon Year’s Eve” balloon drop, the fire chief told NBC10 Boston. What he called a Lego display was knocked over, falling about 12 feet (3.6 meters) onto people.

Peabody police said the display was torn down by the balloons.

A representative from In The Game’s ownership group told NBC10 Boston that the team is cooperating with authorities and referred further questions to the Peabody Fire Department.

Video obtained by NBC10 Boston shows a large crowd, including children, under a net full of balloons. A large, gray display that appears to be a video game arcade machine tips over and spills onto the people below. Some people shouted.

Keegan Oblenes said it took a moment for people in the crowd, including the 13-year-old himself, to figure out what was happening and that people had been hurt.

“I didn’t know anyone was hurt until afterward,” Keegan said. “Then I got kind of worried and everyone started clearing the room and then an ambulance came. And a fire truck. And then the stretcher came out.”

According to an online listing, tickets for the event were sold out. A sign reading “Happy Noon Years” hung above the building’s entrance Tuesday afternoon.

The firefighters called to the scene initially feared a roof collapse. They assumed Tuesday afternoon that the exhibit fell over because children in the crowd pulled on the net containing the balloons.

“I don’t think they’ve done this very often and things just happen and luckily it wasn’t serious,” said Assistant Fire Chief Dan Dean.
