Pep Guardiola: Manchester City are ‘vulnerable’ after blowing a three-goal lead against Feyenoord

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said his side were “vulnerable” after blowing a three-goal lead in a 3-3 Champions League draw with Feyenoord on Tuesday.

Guardiola’s side had led 3-0 after 53 minutes before Feyenoord scored three goals in the final quarter of an hour to secure a draw and extend City’s winning streak to six games in all competitions.

According to Opta, City is the first team in Champions League history to lead a game by three goals in the 75th minute and not win.

“The game was fine, 3-0 and well played. But then we concede the three goals because we are not stable,” Guardiola told Amazon Prime. “We give them the first (goal) and it’s difficult.

“We have lost a lot of games recently and are vulnerable. We need a win. The game was good for confidence, we played at a good level.”

Erling Haaland gave City the lead with a first-half penalty, and a deflected finish from Ilkay Gündogan and Haaland’s second shot followed early in the second half to put the hosts in control.

Anis Hadj Moussa took advantage of a missed back pass from Josko Gvardiol to reduce the deficit for the visitors after 75 minutes, and Ederson was beaten at his near post as Santiago Gimenez reduced the deficit further eight minutes from the end of normal time.

Ederson then stormed away from his goal but was beaten on the ball by Igor Paixao as David Hancko equalized in the 89th minute.

“I don’t know if it’s metal (fragility),” Guardiola added. “The first goal can’t happen and neither can the second, and after that we really want to win to do well. We’re doing well, but we’re not winning any games.

“There are a lot of good things, but after 3-3 there is nothing left that you want to say. At this level we can’t give them (goals) away.”

This puts City in 15th place in the Champions League league phase with eight points from five games, two points behind the automatic qualification places for the knockout rounds.

“At the moment I’m not ready to think about it (maybe I have to win the last three games to get into the top eight),” Guardiola added. “We have to recover and prepare for the next game. If we are not able to win games like today, it will be difficult.”

City return to action against Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
