The person involved in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been identified as a 26-year-old computer whiz who graduated top of his class at his Maryland prep school.

Luigi Mangione, of Towson, Maryland, was carrying a weapon similar to the one used in the fatal shooting of Thompson when he was arrested Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters.

“He is currently believed to be the individual involved in the brazen, targeted assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last Wednesday in Midtown Manhattan,” Tisch said at a news conference Monday.

The break in the case came from a Pennsylvania McDonald’s employee who noticed as Magione was “sitting there eating” that he resembled the suspect featured in the New York Police Department’s wanted posters, Joseph Kenny said. Chief Detective of the New York Police Department.

He was carrying an ID card with his name on it as well as a fake ID when he was taken into custody for questioning, law enforcement sources told The New York Times.

“We don’t believe there are specific threats to anyone else mentioned in this document, but it appears that he has some antipathy toward the American economy,” Kenny said.

Mangione, one of six children, graduated at the top of his class from Gilman School in Baltimore, where he played soccer, according to the New York Post. After graduating, he said he plans to study artificial intelligence at the University of Pennsylvania.

On his X account, he notes that he has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from the Ivy League school.

Social media accounts believed to belong to Mangione portray him as an anti-capitalist who liked online quotes from “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski that denigrated the medical community.

Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that he campaigned online for anti-capitalist causes and climate change and raged against the state of health care in the United States

It’s unclear whether his frustration with the industry stems from personal experience, although his X account shared an X-ray of a spinal fusion caused by a condition more common in athletes than the general population.

Police have been searching since Wednesday for the man who executed Thompson, 50, as he was on his way to an investor meeting at the New York Hilton in Manhattan.

The manager was taken to Mount Sinai West Hospital six blocks away and was pronounced dead as the conference began at 8 a.m

Leading up to the shooting, suspect Thompson appeared to be “lying in wait” as several witnesses spotted a man matching Magione’s description at the property around 6 a.m

Thompson’s wife, Paulette, told NBC News that her husband has received several threats recently.

“Basically, I don’t know, a lack of reporting? I don’t know any details,” she said. “All I know is that he said there were some people who threatened him.”
