Phil Collins has given an update on his health.

The 73-year-old “In the Air Tonight” musician opened up about the condition that left him unable to play the drums in a new documentary about his life, “Phil Collins: Drummer First,” released Wednesday .

“It’s still like it’s a little bit dawning,” Collins admitted on camera in the interview filmed in October 2022.

“I’ve spent my whole life playing drums. Suddenly not being able to do that is a shock.”

Collins has been playing drums since he was five years old, but stopped in March 2022. Among the numerous health issues he has faced in recent years, the Genesis band member was diagnosed with foot drop, a condition that caused him to lose feeling in one of his feet. He has been using a cane to walk since 2015.

The “Tarzan” composer further explained that “drumming has taken its toll on my hands and legs over the years.”

“If I can’t do what I did as well as I did, I’d rather relax and do nothing,” he added.

“If I wake up one day and can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll try it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my airline miles.”

Collins’ son Nic, who followed in his father’s footsteps and played drums, spoke about his father’s health in the documentary.

“Musicians and people in bands in general thought they were invincible,” Nic said.

“I think with my dad it’s really like being a drummer just makes you feel like you’re invincible and you do what you do. But you don’t know that it’s going to take a toll in the long run.”

In 2007, Collins dislocated a cervical vertebra, causing nerve damage to his hands. He had “major surgery on his neck (in 2015) that was a result of all the years of drumming and poor posture,” Nic said. After surgery, Collins began using a cane.

Collins, who joined the band Genesis in the 1970s, tells various stories in the new documentary.

According to the film’s synopsis, the documentary is “told from the drummer’s perspective – from (Collin’s) early days behind the drums to his groundbreaking work with Genesis and his acclaimed solo career, from his time with jazz fusion group Brand X to …” He composed for Disney’s Tarzan, formed his own big band and eventually passed the torch to Nic during the recent Genesis and Phil Collins tours.
