Phoenix man arrested and charged with assault in Capitol riot on Jan. 6

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – A Phoenix man has turned himself in for alleged assaults on officers during the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Federal authorities announced that 35-year-old David Caleb Crosby was taken into custody by the FBI in Phoenix on Wednesday.

According to court documents, Crosby allegedly confronted officers who were trying to stop a police line in the Lower West Plaza of the U.S. Capitol. He reportedly “used his back and body to repeatedly ram into bike racks that were serving as police barriers,” officials said.

Recorded videos reportedly show Crosby repeatedly backing into the police line, even as officers pushed him away and told him to back away. Two officers sprayed chemicals with a “super soaker” to get Crosby to back away.

However, according to investigators, he continued to ram his back into police barriers after being sprayed, encouraging other people to do the same. The police eventually pulled him over the barricades and arrested him.

“His alleged actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the United States Congress convened to determine and count electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election,” investigators said in a statement.

Crosby is accused of:

  • Assaulting, resisting or obstructing certain officers
  • Entering and remaining in a restricted building or area
  • Exercising physical violence in a restricted building or area
  • Disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or on Capitol grounds
  • Engage in an act of physical violence on the grounds or in any of the Capitol buildings

He is also the 20th person arrested in connection with the breach of the Capitol who is from or has ties to Arizona.

Since the Capitol riot, more than 1,500 people have been charged in almost every state. More than 590 people were charged with assault or hindering law enforcement.

Crosby will make his first appearance in the Arizona District. Anyone with tips can call 1-800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324) or visit Tips.fbi.gov.
