Phoenix Sky Harbor Terminal 4 checkpoint reopens after reports of gunfire

Phoenix police responded to a reported shooting at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Wednesday evening as some travelers were returning or leaving late for the Christmas holiday.

Airport officials said the report of gunshots came into the airport’s Terminal 4 shortly after 9:40 p.m.

Phoenix police posted on X, formerly Twitter, that officers are “investigating a shooting that occurred at @PHXSkyHarbor.” No suspects are being sought and airport operations have resumed, the tweet said.

There was no active threat at the airport, the police said on X shortly before midnight. It was also said that no flights were affected by the ongoing investigation.

“Detectives are on scene and are conducting an initial investigation to determine what led to this incident,” police said on X.

Marvin Miller, a cleaner at the airport for three years, said he heard three shots in a row coming from the ticket sales area on the lower level of Terminal 4 around 9 p.m.

“I heard three shots, they were different than fireworks, shots are a big difference,” said Miller, who had just finished his shift when he learned of the incident from his colleagues.

Miller reflected on the security concerns he had seen at the airport when he said anyone could enter the airport terminal from outside.

Eric Everts, an airport spokesman, said in an emailed statement: “The Terminal 4 A security checkpoint has been temporarily closed and PHX Sky Train operations at Terminal 4 have been suspended as a precautionary measure.”
