Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi was excoriated over the “outrageous” decision in the bowl game loss

Pat Narduzzi obviously didn’t attend the Herm Edwards School of Coaching.

Social media and college football fans have excoriated the Pittsburgh coach for opting for a conservative strategy that ultimately backfired when Pittsburgh beat Toledo 48-46 in six overtimes on Thursday in the GameAbove Sports Bowl lost.

Narduzzi opted for a game-winning field goal from the one-yard line in the second overtime instead of going for the win.

“Fourth-and-1, if you don’t make it, you lose the game,” Narduzzi said. “I don’t want it to end like this. I want our children to play games. For me, I always put it in the hands of the children. I’m not in favor of a coach making the decision to lose or win the game.”

Many took issue with Narduzzi’s decision due to college football’s overtime rules.

Both teams went into overtime in a 30-point tie, scoring touchdowns in the first overtime stanza before Toledo (8-5) kicked a field goal in the second overtime.

In the second overtime, teams must score two points if they score a touchdown.

Pittsburgh, receiving the ball on second, moved the ball to the one-yard line and faced a fourth-and-1.

Many believed Narduzzi should have gone for it since Toledo had no chance of keeping up and a field goal would force Pittsburgh to defend two-point games.

From the third overtime, the teams exchange two points.

However, Narduzzi went for the game-winning field goal.

The teams exchanged three successful two-point conversions before Toledo scored on its fourth attempt and Pittsburgh couldn’t keep up to end the game.

The Panthers ended their season with six straight losses after starting 7-0.

“A coach makes a decision, I’m not in favor of that,” said Narduzzi. “I don’t care if I’m on the road or at home. I want our players to make plays.”

He added: “I think extra time is a great system. That’s just how it is.”

Many would have preferred the coach to make the decision.

Fantasy football guru JJ Zachariason tweeted: “I’m glad the world is seeing how outrageous Pat Narduzzi is. Unfortunately, Pitt fans know this is not unusual.”

Barstool personality Dan “Big Cat” Katz had some NSFW feelings.

Bryston Stricker of Bleacher Report wrote: “I mean Jesus Christ. Narduzzi just kicked a FG from the ONE YARD LINE…Next play: MUST SCORING BY THE TWO AND STOP THE OTHER TEAM. These people shouldn’t be millionaires, man.”
