Player Grades: Cavs at Warriors – Donovan Mitchell helps Cavs put ugly first half behind them

The Cleveland Cavaliers won their 28th game of the season with a commanding lead in the second half, defeating the Golden State Warriors 113-95.

Grades are based on our usual expectations for each player.

Donovan Mitchell

23 points (9-19 shooting), 4 assists

Mitchell was instrumental in fueling the Cavaliers’ second-half resurgence. There was a sense that the offense desperately needed a turnaround, and Mitchell delivered. His knack for making back-breaking threes was helpful in keeping any hopes of a Warriors comeback at bay.

Grade: A-

Evan Mobley

7 points (2-6 shots), 7 rebounds, 6 turnovers

Mobley was in foul trouble for much of the game. It felt like he could never find his footing on either end of this game. The Warriors are a smaller team, so one would have liked to have seen Mobley take over the aggressiveness of the Nuggets game, but the threes weren’t falling and there weren’t many opportunities for Mobley to take control.

Grade: C-

Darius Garland

25 points (10-17 shooting), 8 assists

Another game where Garland comes out early and bombs from three points. One would have thought Garland would give off the impression of Steph Curry, as Garland could score at all three levels with ease. It’s amazing how common a performance like this from Garland is. Last season there would have been celebrations for an evening like this.

Grade: A

Jarrett Allen

12 points (6-9 shooting), 9 rebounds

Allen was determined to make the Warriors night hell. However, it felt like the game was leaning towards Allen not being able to be in the final lineup if the game was close. It seemed like the team wasn’t taking advantage of the Warriors’ lack of size, and Allen didn’t really get going until the third quarter. Allen made an impression, but not to the level I would have hoped given the encounters.

Grade: B

Dean Wade

10 points (5-6 shooting), 13 rebounds

Wade was excellent tonight. I feel like Wade has had the most impressive performance outside of the stars. He threw clean looks at the speed you would expect and was extremely active on the glass. The Cavaliers don’t need Wade to get the team on their side to win. However, evenings like this show how versatile and valuable he is for the team.

Grade: A

Max Strus

3 points (1-6 shooting), 4 rebounds

I understand the reasons why Strus was on the ground despite the fighting. It’s clear he’s still working on getting his legs under him. However, the shots he took tonight seemed forced and unwarranted in the rhythm of the offense. It feels like Strus was struggling to find his form, and in the first half the Cavaliers fell victim to a player trying to reintegrate himself into a well-oiled machine.

Grade: D

Caris LeVert

9 points (3-9 shooting)

LeVert is a player who has become very consistent lately. This was a setback for LeVert. The shot wasn’t there, but that has never stopped LeVert from shooting in the past.

Grade: C-

Sam Merrill

5 points (2-4 shots), 2 rebounds

Jackson and I discussed this during the playback stream, but it seemed to me that there would have been better results if the Strus minutes had been played by Merrill. Merrill felt like he was limited in his time on the floor and was able to make a big impact with the limited opportunities he had. Especially given the fact that he was able to hold his own defensively against the Warriors’ smaller lineups.

Grade: C

Georges Niang

3 points (1-3 shooting), 3 rebounds

Aside from getting knocked down by Draymond Green, there wasn’t much to mention from Niang. He has his nights where he can disappear, and with limited shot attempts, tonight was another one of those opportunities.

Grade: C-

Ty Jerome

10 points (3-10 shots), 4 assists

It was hard to see at first whether this would be a game for Jerome to get back into form. He had his chance to make a few shots in the second quarter to keep the Cavs’ offense on its toes. However, any momentum Jerome generated in the second quarter evaporated when he disappeared in the third quarter with no minutes under his belt. All in all, this is a mediocre evening for Jerome, who is looking to get back to the player he was at the start of the season.

Grade: C
