Player Ratings: Atalanta 2-3 Real Madrid; 2024 UEFA Champions League

Full player ratings below:

Thibaut Courtois – 8: Although Courtois conceded two goals, he blocked some shots well (seven saves in total), including three from inside the penalty area.

Lucas Vazquez – 5.5: Adama Lookman got the better of Vazquez and scored Atalanta’s second goal, beating the full-back 1v1 in the penalty area.

Tchouameni – 5.5: It looked like a midfielder playing as a center back when he conceded the penalty – an unnecessary foul in the box. Like Rüdiger, he defended crosses excellently and won headers in the penalty area.

Rüdiger – 7: Crucial in defending his penalty area, but almost lost concentration in the final minute of the game, exaggerating a cross and allowing Retegui a free shot on goal.

Fran Garcia – 6: Didn’t come forward as often as he normally does, but switched to defense against Bellanova, Djimsiti and Pasalic.

Dani Ceballos – 8: Another strong performance in the middle midfield. Constantly working without the ball to close gaps. His defensive stats were outstanding: he won 7/11 ground duels, had 4 clearances, 8 recoveries (team-high), 2 interceptions, 2 completed tackles and was fouled 5 times, helping Madrid escape pressure.

Fede Valverde – 6: He placed the deepest midfielder and implemented a disciplined tactical substitution.

Brahim – 8: I ran tirelessly all night. Execute a massive defensive shift on the right side. Missed a good opportunity in the penalty area after the Atalanta goalkeeper parried a cross from Vinicius right at the Moroccan’s feet.

Jude Bellingham – 9: Made countless runs from his attacking midfield position to strengthen Atalanta’s defensive line. With his movement he unbalanced the Italian team’s man-marking scheme. Appeared as No. 10 in dangerous areas. He kept his scoring streak going with a brilliant 1v1 against De Roon, firing his left-footed shot past the goalkeeper. Once again, did a little bit of everything – offensively and defensively.

Vinicius Junior – 8: The Brazilian recovered early from his injury and was immediately included in the lineup. His individual quality was a nightmare for Atalanta’s system. Found the ball in the net with a clever one-touch finish in the penalty area after a bad pass was deflected his way.

Kylian Mbappe – 7: He scored a goal worthy of his world-class quality. A body movement and touch to deceive the defender and a clinical finish in the box. Was substituted in the first half due to injury.

Substitutions:

Rodrygo – 6: Replaced Kylian Mbappe in the first half and didn’t look 100% fit. The Brazilian rarely attempted a full sprint. Was played through by Bellingham in the second half, but his shot went straight to the goalkeeper.

Luka Modric—5: A few bad passes towards the end of the game led to Atalanta counterattacking against Madrid’s tired legs.

Raul Asencio – 5: Played the last 10 minutes of the game at right-back, relegating Lucas to right midfield. A few heavy touches with his limited involvement.

Arda Guler – N/A: Jude Bellingham is substituted in the 87th minute.
