Player Ratings: Cavs vs. Bucks – Donovan Mitchell and Co. were too strong on offense

The Cleveland Cavaliers got their 24th win of the season with a clear 124:101 win against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Grades are based on our usual expectations for each player.

Donovan Mitchell

27 points (9-15 shooting), 6 assists

Mitchell took advantage of Milwaukee’s seemingly tired legs. He attacked powerfully off the dribble and beyond the arc. It was the kind of game you want to see from Mitchell, even if it wasn’t overly spectacular. He was one of the main reasons the Cavs offense was so good.

Grade: B+

Evan Mobley

15 points (6-10 shots), 7 rebounds, 4 assists

It’s difficult to stay ahead of Giannis Antetokounmpo. He did a good job as a help defender, switching to Antetokounmpo when needed. However, Mobley struggled in situations where he was the only big player on the field against Antetokounmpo, which was to be expected.

Mobley has improved his strength in recent years, but was at a distinct disadvantage compared to Antetokounmpo. Giannis was able to support Mobley and force his way to the basket, as he did against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday. This was especially true in the second quarter, where Antetokounmpo scored 13 of his 33 points.

Mobley had a solid performance on the other side of the ball as he stayed aggressive there. That’s what you want to see from Mobley when he finds himself in a matchup that forces him to work as hard as necessary on defense.

Grade: B

Darius Garland

15 points (6-15 shots), 5 assists

That was a decent performance from Garland. He kept the offense moving, blocked shots and was generally in complete control. That was the kind of performance he made seem commonplace this season.

Grade: B

Jarrett Allen

10 points (5-6 shooting), 10 rebounds

Allen was given Antetokounmpo as the main defensive player and did a good job. He provided strong point defense for Antetokounmpo and did an excellent job of switching and helping when needed.

One of my complaints about Allen is that he has a hard time making his presence felt on both ends of the court. That wasn’t the case today, although he was forced into a tough duel.

Grade: B+

Dean Wade

15 points (5-6 shots), 5 rebounds, 2 assists

Wade was a big part of Cleveland’s outstanding defense against Milwaukee and Antetokounmpo. Not many teams can boast of having multiple defensemen who can switch to Antetokounmpo and hold their own.

Brook Lopez was Wade’s primary defensive lineman. He did a good job of staying with Lopez on the perimeter, switching to Antetokounmpo and collapsing to protect the basket when necessary.

Wade also did a good job on offense. He took the shots that were available to him during the course of the offense. It was exactly the kind of game you want from Wade.

Grade: A

Max Strus

9 points (3-7 shots), 6 assists, 3 rebounds

Strus looked a lot in the first half like someone who hadn’t played a single NBA game this season. He couldn’t find range on his outside shot and nearly committed a turnover at the end of the first quarter, which would have been costly and unnecessary. Luckily for him, it didn’t count as the foul happened shortly after the buzzer.

He got along quite well in the second half. Strus knocked down a few three-pointers, moved the ball well on offense and was energetic on his off-ball shots. The Cavs would like to adopt the version of Strus they saw in the second half.

Grade: B

Caris LeVert

7 points (3-7 shots), 4 assists

LeVert was unable to repeat his strong performance from Monday. He had a few head-scratching plays that have been commonplace in recent years. LeVert missed an open three-pointer, but then dribbled into the paint and turned it over. The Cavs also stopped the last shot in the second quarter, only LeVert couldn’t even save an attempt.

He made up for it at the end of the third period by converting a layup with a few seconds left, then stealing the incoming pass and setting up Mitchell for a game-winning three-pointer.

Grade: C+

Sam Merrill

5 points (2-6 shots), 3 rebounds, 1 assist

Merrill hit a three-pointer and played with energy on defense. That’s what you expect from him when he’s on the pitch.

Grade: C+

Georges Niang

5 points (2-4 shots), 2 rebounds

A team with a powerful power forward like Antetokounmpo will be a tough matchup for Niang. He did a good job of not standing out on defense, which is what you want in a game like this, but he didn’t make a significant impact on offense either. It was the odd game in which Niang simply didn’t play a significant role.

Grade: B-

Ty Jerome

13 points (5-9 shots), 4 assists

This was the first time in several weeks that Jerome looked like a version of the player he was during his hot streak a month ago. He sank a few three-pointers, managed to knife his way into the lane and handled the offense well. If they could, the Cavs would sign up for a performance like this every night.

Grade: A-
