Player Ratings: Juventus 1-2 AC Milan

AC Milan secured their ticket to the Supercoppa Italiana final thanks to a quick turnaround against Juventus on Friday evening. The substitutions made the difference and below are the player ratings for Sergio Conceicao’s side.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check it out how we decide on player ratings. From the scale to the impact on the rating, we have put everything together there.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): He managed to get the ball under control, but was unable to fully block the shot for the first goal. It was a very good shot from Yildiz, I have to say. The Frenchman also got along well with his feet, especially in the second half.

Emerson Royal (6): He had some good defensive interventions, but the biggest difficulties came in the build-up of the game (especially in the first half). It was a close call, but the Brazilian was good enough in the second half – in both phases – to receive a pass here.

Tomori (6): His positioning wasn’t great, perhaps understandable given the lack of playing time recently, and there was one chance in particular that could have been costly (Vlahovic took the lead but shot wide). However, he also managed to show some good interventions and thus score a pass.

Thiaw (7 – MOTM): He was undoubtedly Milan’s best defender tonight as the positioning was always spot on. He also covered his teammates several times and was the one who went forward and attempted the slightly more complicated passes. In other words, another great game from him.

Hernandez (4.5): He had to make the goal a lot better. You could see him looking at the ball and catching Yildiz’s run too late. The failed interception attempt simply highlighted his poor positioning. In the second half he absolutely missed a shot from close range and had a few other questionable moments too. He had some involvement in the penalty win after improving but it was still a night to forget for him.

Bennacer (5): Too many touches of the ball, sloppy and not fully aware of his surroundings. All normal symptoms for a player who is not fit to play and unfortunately this was highlighted by the Algerian tonight. His substitution in the second half showed how to do the job.

Fofana (5.5): It was a positive start to the game for him, but then he struggled a bit as he certainly didn’t have the same impact in building up the game and had little success with his shots in the final third.

Reijnders (5.5): He wasn’t particularly comfortable with the ball tonight and made a lot of technical errors, which really hampered his creativity in the final third. Hopefully just a one-off bad game from him, we know he can do much better.

Pulisic (6.5): Until he scored the penalty he had been pretty bad to tell the truth and it wouldn’t have been a surprise if he had been substituted. He also had some luck with the penalty BUT it served its purpose and helped turn the game around. Still, it could have been much more effective earlier.

Morata (6): It’s a performance that some might call poor, but he was involved in all of Milan’s dangerous chances today. He set up Theo for the passer, who he missed, then after a beautiful move he almost scored himself and combined with Musah for the winning goal.

Jimenez (5.5): It wasn’t actually his fault, but he struggled to influence the game and when he did get the chance to cross, the performance wasn’t exactly the best.

Substitute

Musah (7): He was great off the bench and would have won the MOTM if Thiaw hadn’t played confidently defensively. It was a massive difference from Bennacer and even though the goal was a bit lucky, he made things happen with the ball. When he then switched to the right-back position, he was ice cold and mastered the duels perfectly.

Abraham (7): The Englishman came into the game with the right attitude, lighting fire up front for Milan and showing his skills with a great counter-attack (which deserved more, Pulisic’s shot was saved).

Gabbia (6.5): He ended up saving a goal with a great block against Gatti, which alone means he deserves a rating.

Terracciano (N/A): We haven’t seen enough to give it a rating.
