Championship contenders Plymouth Argyle delivered an FA Cup triumph on Saturday when they beat Premier League side Brentford in the third round at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Plymouth, who sit at the top of the Championship table with 20 points from 24 games, ended an 11-game winning streak in style as Morgan Whittaker’s low left-footed shot sent the away fans into raptures.

Whittaker’s 84th-minute strike secured Plymouth’s first win over a top club in more than 40 years.

Plymouth’s poor results this season saw them part ways with head coach Wayne Rooney on New Year’s Eve, temporarily handing the reins to Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards.

Miron Muslic was named the club’s permanent head coach on Friday and watched his new side’s victory from the stands in west London.

“Congratulations to Plymouth, I think they deserved to win,” Thomas Frank said at a post-match press conference. “I think they put in a lot of effort, I think they defended brilliantly. I think they ran hard and got a really good goal from a player we knew could score the goal.”

Frank may have been disappointed with the lack of threat his team showed against their second division opponents – the home side only managed two shots on target in the 90 minutes.

The Brentford coach sent on star strikers Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa in the second half in an attempt to salvage a result, but his substitutions proved futile as Brentford crashed out of the FA Cup in the third round for the third consecutive year.

“I’m really proud, really emotional,” Nancekivell told reporters. “It was a tough time. When you lose a manager you have to hold your ground, which is what we were asked to do. Joe has been excellent at my side and I’m just happy that we were able to give our fans a little joy.” Nice trip home.
