Police are investigating the identity and motivation of a teenage shooter at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (WLS) — Now that the immediate active shooter situation has passed, police in Madison, Wisconsin, and federal law enforcement are focusing on who the shooter was, why she did it, and what can be learned to prevent the next attack on a school impede.

When the calls for help came in and the police were called into action, no one expected to find a shooter at Abundant Life Christian School. Almost all mass shootings in the last 40 years have been carried out by boys or men. Their 9mm pistol was the equivalent of what is used in most mass shootings, about twice as common as rifles or shotguns.

While the shooter, who died by suicide, has not been named, authorities say her family has cooperated with investigators.

“We have initiated the search, but we believe that the search is either ongoing or that the search may be completed,” Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said.

The police search of her home is aimed at seizing computers and other personal electronic devices to help identify the shooter’s so-called “digital fingerprints.” Investigators must also rule out whether the teenager helped carry out the 11 a.m. attack or whether he simply informed friends or family of a violent plan.

“We do not know that the shooter had any prior contact with law enforcement,” Barnes said. “You know, we’re not going to interrogate the students. We will give them the opportunity to come in and talk about what they may have seen if they feel ready.”

Not only is rapid police response to an active shooter call now an accepted and expected tactic, there is also a police template for mass shooting investigations.

“Why did this happen? What do we know? What was the motivation? I don’t know it. But I’ll tell you this: Our investigators are working hard in the investigative process to find out as many answers as possible so that we can prevent things like this from happening, not only in this community, but in other communities across our country Barnes.

It won’t be long before we learn the identity of the teenage shooter. The police chief in Madison said investigators are expected to provide details about her name and background at their briefing Monday night at 9:30 p.m. ET.

A teacher and a teenager were killed and six injured in a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, police said.
