Police investigate Cybertruck explosion at Trump Hotel in Las Vegas

Police are investigating the explosion of a Tesla cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to police, on Wednesday, a Cybertruck stopped in front of the hotel near a glass entrance, whereupon smoke began to rise from the vehicle and it exploded.

The driver was killed and seven people were injured, police said, without naming the people involved. Officials said all injuries were minor.

The fire occurred at about 0840 PT (1540 GMT), just hours after 10 people were killed when a man drove a truck into a crowd in New Orleans, Louisiana, on New Year’s Day.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Police Department said officers were “well aware of what happened in New Orleans,” citing the attack in which improvised explosive devices were found near the crime scene in Louisiana.

“As you can imagine, in the face of an explosion here on an iconic Las Vegas boulevard, we are taking every precaution we need to take to ensure the safety of our community,” he said during a news conference.

“Of course, a Cybertruck, the Trump Hotel, there are a lot of questions that we need to answer as we move forward,” he added.

Mr. McMahill said there was no longer a threat to the Las Vegas community.

Fire officials said crews worked quickly to extinguish the vehicle fire.

They added that the public should stay away from the area and that the hotel was evacuated and most guests relocated elsewhere.

In a statement posted on X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that “Tesla’s entire senior team is currently investigating this matter. We will release more information as soon as we learn anything. We’ve never seen anything like this before.”

The hotel is partly owned by President-elect Donald Trump’s company. In a post on

“The safety and well-being of our guests and employees remains our top priority. We wholeheartedly thank the Las Vegas Fire Department and local law enforcement for their quick response and professionalism,” he said.

Videos of the incident shared on social media show a Cybertruck in front of the entrance to the Trump Hotel before it burst into flames.

Stephen Ferlando told The Washington Post that he witnessed the incident from his hotel room on the 53rd floor of Trump Tower. He told the outlet that there was “definitely an explosion” and that the windows started shaking.

According to its website, the Trump Hotel spans 64 floors with approximately 1,300 suites.

Trump recently named Musk co-head of a presidential advisory commission, the Department of Government Efficiency, after the two became close during Trump’s campaign.
