Police shoot man armed with machete – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis police officer shot and killed a man with a machete who was attacking two people in an east side commercial area Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, two people, a man and a woman, who were injured by the attacker were stable when taken to a hospital. No officers were injured.

The attacker and the two injured people knew each other, as investigators later found out.

As of Wednesday evening, no one involved had been publicly identified. The Marion County coroner’s office was expected to release the attacker’s name later, and IMPD has waited several days before releasing the officer’s name in previous police shootings.

IMPD was called around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a vehicle accident in the 1400 block of Brookville Way, east of the I-465 interchange at Brookville Road and Shadeland Avenue. This is in a commercial area on Brookville Road.

As officers were en route to the scene, the report was upgraded to a disturbance involving a weapon.

“As an officer arrived, a witness restrained him and advised him that there was a man on the other side of the building with a machete in his hand,” IMPD Deputy Chief Tanya Terry said in an impromptu press conference Wednesday evening at the crime scene. “As the officer turned the corner in his fully marked police vehicle, he encountered an adult male in the parking lot who had a machete in his hand.”

According to IMPD, the officer asked the man several times to drop the machete.

“The officer attempted to create more distance from the suspect, but the suspect moved quickly toward the officer with the machete in his hand,” and that’s when the police shootout occurred, Terry said.

Investigators later learned that the attacker had previously “intentionally” rammed a vehicle containing a man and a woman. When the woman got out of the vehicle, the attacker struck her in the head and body with the machete, injuring her.

The man then ran to a nearby store for help. Investigators suspect he was injured in the accident.

Investigators believe the attacker waited for the man and woman to leave work, Terry said.

The attacker was also a former employee of a company in the industrial area.

“A witness also told investigators that the suspect told him he was witnessing a suicide by a police officer,” Terry said. “This occurred after his attack on the victims but before officers arrived.”

IMPD Chief Chris Bailey says the incident may have resulted from a domestic situation. He called the crime “a very strange situation that we wish hadn’t happened tonight.”

The incident left several damaged vehicles in the parking lot, according to IMPD.

The officers wore body cameras and had cameras in their IMPD vehicles. Bailey noted that the camera footage would eventually be shared and would show the attacker’s “propensity for violence.”

According to IMPD, there was no longer a threat to the community after the shooting and officers were not searching for anyone else.
