For the second year in a row, the Pop-Tarts Bowl captured the attention of the college football world. The story of the game wasn’t just about the touchdowns or turnovers (although there were plenty of both), but also about the mascots.

Not only did the game — a high-scoring offensive contest that ended with a thrilling 1-point Iowa State victory — live up to expectations, but the pastry-based chaos went beyond that. Like last year, the game ended with a finale as the Cinnamon Roll Pop-Tart happily sacrificed its life for the winners.

The Pop-Tarts Bowl had a lot to offer after the creation of the edible mascot last season. But the game followed up on last year’s success by tripling the number of edible mascots and causing even more mayhem on Saturday.

The three mascots – Hot Fudge Sundae, Wild Berry and Cinnamon Roll – were introduced with an aluminum foil unveiling before the game.

Beyond the mascots, other parts of the game were given a festive, sugary feel. Special sprinkles were painted along the sidelines. The bowl game trophy has been converted into a real, working toaster. The broadcast staff addressed the issue and ESPN’s Cole Cubelic showed up to the game in his own Pop Tart costume. Before the game, one of the pastries – Cinnamon Roll – even visited a local hospital in Orlando, helping the staff and kissing babies in the maternity ward.

Outside the stadium was a monument honoring Frosted Strawberry, the Pop-Tart who bravely (and joyfully) sacrificed himself to Kansas State, the winner of last year’s inaugural Pop-Tarts Bowl.

The pastries consumed were also honored during the game with a memorial service and a minute’s silence. But in an unexpected twist, the Frosted Strawberry rose again on Saturday, miraculously coming back to life and still bearing the marks of having been eaten the year before.

There were plenty of other antics during the game, including Wild Berry sneaking up behind an unsuspecting referee and Hot Fudge Sundae being prematurely nibbled by Miami mascot Sebastian the Ibis.

But it was only after the game that the pastries could really shine. Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht was named the game’s MVP and got to choose which mascot would be consumed by the team. Becht chose Cinnamon Roll as the offering.

The good luck cookie, which featured a sign urging people to “follow your dreams,” was then toasted in a giant, oversized toaster and spit out for the entire team to enjoy.

After all, dreams really do come true.
