Post-game press conference from kicker Matt Wright

Chiefs kicker Matt Wright talks about four field goals, including his game-winner

So if you line up with the kick, it’s obvious that the game is winning. What’s going through your mind? You’ve done some kicks before, other matter. What’s on your mind? Just try to do the same routine. I say the same sentences in my head every time and just try to focus on being as proficient as possible, when you look up and see it, move it a little to the left. It’s that thought when you see the direction it’s going to go that it’s not good. Um, obviously I wanted it to go right in the middle, but I’m just glad it went in. I just keep saying, “Relax, relax, relax, relax.” Um, because I don’t care anymore, it will help if I get fit. Uh, I’m just trying to do what I do. I’d like to hear the crowd erupt after Dinton goes in. I don’t remember that at all. Um, I’ll definitely look back and see it, but yeah, I don’t remember that at all. Uh, not a bad place at all. Um, it was something to keep in mind throughout the game, but it wasn’t there at all. I mean, when you line up for the game, the winner of the game or you guys, they drive down, you know, it might depend on you, some kickers like to watch, want to know what’s going on. Some people just like to go online. What is your routine on the sidelines as this ride unfolds? Uh, yeah, just stay online as long as possible. Um, try to make a *** kick on third down and then get ready to run onto the field. So it was easier to know when the kick was going to come and then I knew we were going to take a break. So I was just on the net until the timeout and then I ran out, Ma, because I was just thinking about your path. The hardest part about something like this is how rewarding it is. Yes, that’s a testament to James and Matt because the new kicker is hard for both of them and then the Oo line is doing a great job. But um yeah, I just try to stay focused and make sure that when I’m alone, I treat reps like game reps and then, yeah, just be ready to do what I’m doing. Yes. Yes, damn it. Um yeah, but my wife is super helpful and just gives me confidence for the future. Uh yeah, just try my best to keep doing my kicks and just stay close to you. *** Lots of practice. How many times when you hit the post, that happens a lot or I don’t like to think about hitting the post. So I can tell you the answer to that. Have you ever had a damn security lobby? Your special teams coach? Do you do kickoffs? No, I said, uh, Matt Ariza felt weird because I, I mean, when it’s the player, it feels a little more normal, but it felt weird, but I mean, he did a damn good job tonight accomplished, so it was great to see how they were thinking about pushing the offense further so they didn’t have to rely on the field. What did you think when you got there in May? At this moment there are not many thoughts in my head. I just say my sentences over and over in my head. When you talk about your preparation, just try to stick with it and not worry about anything else. Are you going over? What about the game in such a damn situation? Where do you want to be and so on? To be honest, we haven’t talked about it. Um, if it’s that short, I should do it no matter where it is. So that’s what I like to think: Have you thought about your unorthodox location and Chief’s story at all lately? Um, I haven’t really, but I’m sure I will in the coming days. Uh, but yeah, I mean, it’s great. I’m glad to be here. I’m glad I was there and, uh yeah, I’m just really happy for the team in terms of confidence. How does this help you? Oh, it’s huge. Um, being able to make kicks in the NFL is great. Whenever I get around to it, I’m happy with 333. I was actually on the 49er and we had three kickers in three weeks. So it’s funny that you asked that, but not three game winners. Thank you very much, I appreciate you.
